Director Todd Phillips: ‘War Dogs’ is Different From ‘The Hangover’

Director Todd Phillips is most well-known for helming The Hangover films, wild comedies about four friends road tripping together to attend a wedding. Phillips’ latest project, a biographical crime comedy called War Dogs, is about two arms dealers in their early 20s who get a contract to supply weapons to US forces in Afghanistan. While it’s another comedy movie for Phillips, the director says it is different from what he has done before.

“Tonally, it’s different than a movie like The Hangover,” Phillips told BackstageOL’s Dave Morales. “It’s certainly more dramatic. You know, there is comedy in there, but it’s not a flat-out like Hangover comedy.”

“That was probably the toughest part for me… just sort of attacking that new tone,” Phillips revealed.

War Dogs stars Jonah Hill and Miles Teller as real-life figures Efraim Diveroli and David Packouz and is currently in theaters.
