‘Disconnect,’ A Must See Emotional Roller Coaster

Directed by Academy Award nominee Henry Alex Rubin (“Murderball”) and written by Andrew Stern, “Disconnect” is the story of the dangers of the internet that serves as a wake up call to social network users everywhere. With incredible performances from the entire cast, it is an impressive film that grabs your attention from the very beginning and doesn’t let go until well after the credits. It tells four different stories woven together from the same origin: the internet. To say any more would be a crime, it just simply must be experienced.

The cast includes Jason Bateman (nailing a dramatic role), Frank Grillo (“The Grey”), Michael Nyqvist (2009’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”), Alexander Skarsgård (“True Blood”), and Max Thieriot (“The House at the End of the Street”). With the amazing screenplay and direction the cast immaculately portrays the necessary emotions in every situation. Be it a father, son, ex-marine, or child sex cam performer – the characters are fleshed out to where each one earns sympathy from the viewer (deserved or not), followed by nail biting suspense.

The writing brings to mind the films written by Oscar nominee Guillermo Arriaga like “Amores Perros” and “21 grams” in that it tells multiple stories that have much more to say than a singular storyline. With each scene being absolutely necessary, it reveals more and more of each scenario that inevitably leads to an electrifying climax. The casting, cinematography, score, and every other component of the film are completely flawless.

The interesting fact about the film is how close it hits to home. It relies, at first, on our obsession with the internet and social networking and how seemingly safe it can be – when in fact it can be the exact opposite. The tragedy that unfolds is incredibly believable and real that it gives its audience a reason to pay attention and relate, as if it matters. Not too many films can be said to do the same from this year so far, or in recent years for that matter.

This film is a gem of the dramatic indie film scene, not being a big budget forgettable waste of time. Lessons can be learned regarding what’s most important in our lives and that if we’re not careful, we could miss them. Its a grade A film that is one of the most compelling and well crafted in years that points out today’s society’s vices with brutal honesty. With palpable style, incredible intensity, and moving performances “Disconnect” reminds us to keep morality in mind – no matter how blurry it may seem.

“Disconnect” is now playing in select theaters.
