Disney Sets Release Date for Live-Action ‘Mulan’

Disney is going to keep cranking out live-action adaptations of its classic animated films!

Back in March 2015, the studio announced it would be giving 1998’s Mulan the live-action treatment. On Tuesday, it was revealed that a release date has been set for the film: November 2, 2018.

Disney plans to conduct a worldwide casting search for a Chinese actress to play the title role. The film currently does not have a director. Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who co-wrote Jurassic World, are penning the script. Jason Reed, Chris Bender, and Jake Weiner are producing it.

The studio has found great success at the box office in making live-action adaptations of its popular films, including Maleficent, Cinderella, and The Jungle Book. The next adaptation to be released is the highly anticipated Beauty and the Beast, which hits theaters March 17, 2017. Disney also has plans in the works to make Cruella, a film about the 101 Dalmatians villain Cruella De Vil starring Emma Stone, and Tink, a film starring Reese Witherspoon as Tinker Bell from Peter Pan. It was also recently announced that a Lion King live-action adaptation is in development.

Mulan tells the tale of a young woman who pretends to be a man in order to take her father’s place in the war against the Huns. The animated version of Mulan featured Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD actress Ming-Na Wen voicing Mulan, and Lea Salonga doing her singing voice. In addition the animated film, the Chinese poem about Mulan that was written in the 5th or 6th century will be used as source material for the film.
