One construction worker was killed and two others were injured on the set of Martin Scorsese’s film Silence on Thursday.
Chen Yu-lung died after a ceiling collapsed on him and his co-workers at the Chinese Culture and Movie Center during pre-production of the film in Taiwan. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The other men suffered head and leg injuries.
A spokesman released a statement about the accident to Deadline Hollywood:
“Today there was an unfortunate accident at CMPC Studios in Taiwan, where the Martin Scorsese film, Silence, is in pre-production. An existing structure on the CMPC backlot had been deemed unsafe by the production, and accordingly a 3rd-party contractor was hired to reinforce and make it safe prior to any production-related work commencing in this building. Sadly, during this process, the ceiling collapsed, resulting in the death of one of the contractor’s employees and injuries to two others. Everyone is in shock and sorrow and expresses their deepest concern and sympathy to the families of the individual who died and those who were injured.”
It is unknown if Scorsese was at the site during the time of the accident.
Silence is a historical drama that follows two Jesuit priests in 17th century Japan and is based on a 1966 novel by Shusaku Endo. The film will star Liam Neeson, Andrew Garfield, and Adam Driver. It is expected to be released in 2016.
