Tom Hanks and Ron Howard to Adapt Dan Brown’s ‘Inferno’

Sony Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have confirmed that the 2013 best-seller mystery novel, Inferno, by Dan Brown is scheduled to begin shooting in Italy this April.

The novel is the fourth book in Brown’s Robert Langdon series, following 2000’s Angels & Demons, 2003’s The Da Vinci Code and 2009’s The Lost Symbol.

Actor Tom Hanks is set to return to reprise his role as the Harvard professor, Robert Langdon in this third film adaptation.

The previous installments of the Langdon franchise, Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons were both successful at the global box office, with the former receiving $758 million and the latter grossing $486 million worldwide.

Inferno follows Langdon as he tries to stop someone from unleashing a global plague, all while dealing with amnesia and working with Sienna Brooks, a doctor who he hopes will help him piece together his memories.

Ron Howard, who directed The Da Vinci Code in 2006 and its 2009 sequel Angels & Demons, will return to direct Inferno. Brian Grazer will return, as well, to produce with Howard, and David Koepp will write the script.

The film is set to hit theaters December 18, 2015.
