Watch: ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Second Trailer

“Your destiny is in your blood.” That’s the tagline for Assassin’s Creed, 20th Century Fox’s big Christmas release. Based off Ubisoft’s best-selling video game series, Fox and New Regency look to buck the trend of bad video game movies. Casting Michael Fassbender is a good start. Having played the likes of Macbeth, Steve Jobs and X-Men’s Magneto, Fassbender looks game to add assassin to his filmography.

In Assassin’s Creed (set to open in theaters on December 21, 2016), Fassbender is Callum Lynch. Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Lynch is able to experience the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain during the Inquisition. There he discovers he’s a descendant from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Joining Fassbender in this period adventure are Academy Award winners Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) and Jeremy Irons (Reversal of Fortune) as well as Brendan Gleeson (Calvary), Charlotte Rampling, Michael K. Williams, and Khalid Abdalla. The film is helmed by Justin Kurzel, who previously directed Fassbender and Cotillard in 2015’s Macbeth.
