WATCH: Will Smith Tackles the NFL in ‘Concussion’

Before Will Smith enters comic book territory with Suicide Squad he will be chasing Oscar gold with his new film Concussion.

Concussion is based on the true story of Bennet Omalu, a Nigerian doctor who discovers chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition that affects the brain of players who take repeated blows to the head. Dr. Omalu fights against the NFL for the awareness of the condition while hitting some obstacles along the way.

The film was brought to the attention of NFL owners back in May and formed a meeting to ready themselves for the backlash they might receive from mainstream audiences. CTE awareness has been an on going battle the NFL has denied responsibility for and later embraced it by changing rules to the game and creating advancements in player safety. Recently this year, a one billion dollar plan was approved by a federal judge. The plan has the NFL to pay retired players amounts ranging from 25,000 to five million dollars for retired players with severe diseases and cases of dementia.

Now with Concussion, it seems CTE will be at the forefront of football discussion by the end of December.

Concussion stars Will Smith, Alec Baldwin, Gugu Mbatha- Raw, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Albert Brooks in the film that is sure to create buzz once award season comes around.

The film is in theaters December 25th, 2015!
