Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ Headed Towards 1.2 Million Debut

Taylor Swift’s fifth studio album, 1989, is shaking up the charts! Industry forecasters are predicting that the newly released album, which dropped on Monday, October 27th, could sell 1.2 million copies in its first week alone.

To help with promotion, the singer has been using all forms of social media to create hype in anticipation of her pop album these past few weeks. Along with making many TV appearances on Good Morning America, Late Night With David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live, Swift has been flooding her pages with teasers from each of her 13 tracks.

“Fans really feel they have a connection with Swift, and want to have the full experience, so to speak, by buying the ‘1989’ album,” said Keith Caulfield, an associate director of charts at Billboard. “Fans feel like Swift is their BFF.”

Her previous album, Red, was released in 2012 and debuted at 1.208 million copies in its first week. It currently remains as the fastest seller since Eminem’s 2002 The Eminem Show (1.322 million album sales).

The new album was released through Big Machine Records, and will likely debut at the top of next week’s Billboard 200 chart when the Top 10 is announced. Many are saying that just on the first day, 1989 sold more than 600,000 albums, primarily from Target and Apple’s iTunes Store.

If forecasters are correct, Swift’s album will become the biggest-selling album to be released in 2014 since Red in a span of one week on sale. The top four sellers for this year are currently the Frozen soundtrack (3.2 million), Beyonce’s self-titled album (787,000), Lorde’s Pure Heroine (767,000), and Coldplay’s Ghost Stories (737,000). The latter ranks as the biggest-selling album released this year as the previous three came out in 2013.
