Danny Woodhead Expected Out Rest of the Year

San Diego Chargers running back Danny Woodhead is expected to miss the rest of the season due to an injury received during their 22-10 win versus the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Woodhead was carted off the field after injuring his fibula and right ankle during the Charger’s opening drive in Buffalo. The 29-year-old remained laying on the field for several minutes until he was carted to the locker room.

The injury left a grim tone in the locker room as it was revealed he received a severe high ankle sprain and a fractured fibula, the latter of which could result in a season-ending injury for Woodhead.

“You hate it for him first,” said San Diego quarterback Phillip Rivers. “Obviously, it’s going to hurt us. But you hate it for him. He’ll get through it. It’s tough, I know, early like this to get hurt like that. We’ll miss him, but guys will step up. You don’t want anybody to get hurt. We’d be disappointed if anybody got hurt. But it just adds to the fact that you know a guy who loves it that much, cares about it that much, and goes down on his first snap.”

Woodhead ended up leaving the stadium on crutches and is expected to undergo more tests today. The team is reportedly most concerned about his fractured fibula, since surgery would immediately end his season.

Donald Brown and Branden Oliver are expected to pick up the slack in a suddenly thin backfield after the loss of Woodhead and Ryan Matthews, who’s missing a month with a sprained ACL.
