Melissa McCarthy: ‘No One Asked Me or Sookie’ to be in ‘Gilmore Girls’ Revival

Before Melissa McCarthy became a star on the big screen, McCarthy starred in the comedy-drama television series Gilmore Girls from 2000 to 2007. Netflix and Warner Bros. are currently developing a revival of the series, but it appears that McCarthy will not be reprising her role as the character Sookie St. James.

When a fan tweeted McCarthy and pleaded for her to be on the revival, McCarthy revealed that she hadn’t been asked to:

This news contradicts what Gilmore Girls’ creator and showrunner for the revival, Amy Sherman-Palladino, revealed to TVLine in an interview this week, in which she said she reached out to McCarthy’s agents about her returning.

“She’s really f—ing busy,” she stated. “But the thing I have said [to her team] is, ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene. Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] — even if for just a cameo — we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out. That’s the way we left it.”

Currently, Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Sean Gunn and Keiko Agena are set to return for the revival, which will consist of four ninety-minute episodes. Each episode with take place during a different season of one year. The new series will take place in present day, eight years after the original series ended. Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino will pen and direct all of the new episodes.

Shooting for the series began Tuesday. It is currently unknown when the revival will arrive on Netflix.
