‘Sherlock’ To Possibly End With Season 4

The upcoming fourth season of the crime drama Sherlock may be the show’s final season.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrays the title character, spoke to GQ UK and hinted that the show may be coming to a close.

“It might be the end of an era. It feels like the end of an era, to be honest. It goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately,” he stated. “We never say never on the show. I’d love to revisit it, I’d love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that, but in the immediate future we all have things that we want to crack on with and we’ve made something very complete as it is, so I think we’ll just wait and see.”

Since Sherlock first premiered in 2010, Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman’s careers have skyrocketed, making it more difficult for the two to film the show in the midst of their busy schedules. Cumberbatch has starred in The Hobbit series, had an Oscar-nominated role in The Imitation Game,  and will make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe this year as Doctor Strange. Freeman was featured in the first season of Fargo, also starred in The Hobbit series, and was seen earlier this year in Captain America: Civil War. The showrunner Steven Moffat is also very busy, since he writes for Doctor Who.

The last episode of Sherlock was a holiday special titled “The Abominable Bride,” which aired earlier this year. Before that, the last regular episode of the show aired two and half years ago.

Season four will premiere in 2017. Watch the teaser for the new season below:
