We are in an age of revivals. From Arrested Development to Gilmore Girls, former critically lauded and award-winning shows are finding their way back on the air. Whereas Netflix has specialized in bringing back a few former network TV series, the announcement of the return of Will & Grace in 2017 comes from NBC, the network which aired the series from 1998-2006.
The series starring Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes was one of the last major comedies as part of NBC’s “Must See TV” Thursday night line-up. Now NBC has closed a deal for a new 10-episode installment of the hit series.
According to Deadline, the limited-run ninth season of Will & Grace stems from the surprise election-themed reunion mini-episode released on Sept. 26. The piece was done without the involvement of NBC but ultimately led to speculation of a real reunion. The stars joined in the months after the episode’s airing as well as creators/executive producers Max Mutchnick and David Kohan.
During its run on NBC, Will & Grace won 16 Emmys, including best comedy series, and is credited with helping pave the way for LGBT characters on television. The show features the first openly gay lead characters on a primetime network series.
