World Cup Final Sets Social Media and Viewership Records

The exciting World Cup final between Germany and Argentina on Sunday not only saw Germany become the first European team to become World Cup champions in South America, but the match also broke social media and viewership records.

The match generated 618,725 tweets per minute on Twitter, beating out the previous record of 580,166 tweets per minute during Germany vs. Brazil last week. Overall, there were 32. 1 million tweets about the Germany vs. Argentina match, which did not manage to surpass the record of 35.6 million tweets sent out for Germany vs. Brazil.

Twitter also revealed the most talked about players in the match:

As for Facebook, 88 million people set a record of 280 million interactions during the final. It was the highest amount of engagement on Facebook for a single sporting event, taking over the previous record of 245 million interactions for the 2013 Super Bowl. Facebook added that the top 5 countries engaging about the event were U.S., Brazil, Argentina, Germany and Indonesia. The 2014 FIFA World Cup was also the biggest event on Facebook, which involved over 350 million users and 3 billion posts, comments, and likes.

For television viewership,  the final drew Germany’s largest-ever-audience with 34.75 million viewers. Ratings for American TV viewership will be released later today.
