James Michael Tyler, 59, known as Gunther on the popular NBC sitcom “Friends” has passed away after a courageous battle with advanced stage prostate cancer. His manager confirmed the news to Variety on Sunday morning.

James Michael Tyler’s Diagnosis

Unfortunately, Tyler was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer back in September 2018. Earlier this year, he shared his story on the “Today” show. He also campaigned for individuals with prostates to get checked earlier than recommended.

Mourning the Beloved Actor

“Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate and loving husband,” his manager shared in a statement. “Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers and would often find himself in fun and unplanned adventures. If you met him once, you made a friend for life.”

An outpouring amount of tributes remembering Tyler have been shared by all who adored him. The official “Friends” Twitter tweeted: “Warner Bros. Television mourns the loss of James Michael Tyler, a beloved actor and integral part of our FRIENDS family. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues and fans.”

James Michael Tyler’s Time on ‘Friends’

Tyler became a fan favorite while portraying Gunther, a worker at the Central Perk café who had a massive crush on Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) that eventually progressed. Evidently, the character remained as a guest star throughout the series’ 10-year run. Tyler even appeared via video conference on “Friends: The Reunion,” the HBO Max special that happened earlier this year.

Additionally, Tyler’s impressive list of series credits include “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” “Scrubs” and “Modern Music.” Also while he received treatment, Tyler starred in two short films: The Gesture and the Word and Processing. He has earned best actor awards at several film festivals for his work in these movies.
