Benedict Cumberbatch Talks Wearing the ‘Doctor Strange’ Cloak

This weekend, Benedict Cumberbatch enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Strange.

In the film, a car accident leaves neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange unable to continue his career as he can no longer use his hands. In his search for a cure, his life is altered forever when he gains magical powers that he could choose to use to protect the world.

As a superhero, Cumberbatch had to wear a special, heavy cloak for the role.

“It’s really got some heft to it and you want that. It moves beautifully,” Cumberbatch said of his costume. “And you have to move quite fast and quite strongly to make it move beautifully…Aesthetically, it’s astounding. It’s a real departure, again, it’s really a new look for Marvel.”

“It’s also incredibly pragmatic,” he added. “I mean those boots took a long time to put on, but they are very cushioned so that you can run and fight in them…It’s there to accommodate the actor, rather than the other way around, which is a relief.”

Doctor Strange also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg, Benjamin Bratt, Scott Adkins, Mads Mikkelsen, and Tilda Swinton.
