Jon Hamm Shines in ‘Confess, Fletch’

Confess, Fletch starring Jon Hamm hits theaters Friday, September 16, 2022. Based on a novel of the same name, the film centers around  Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher. A character made famous in the ’80s by Chevy Chase in the movies Fletch and Fletch Lives.

This time around Fletch (Hamm) becomes the prime suspect in a murder while investigating a stolen paint. Fletch must prove his innocence while trying to find the real murderer, who could be an art dealer, a missing playboy, or even his own girlfriend.

Jon Hamm and the director of the film Greg Mottola sit down with Dave Morales to discuss what made them bring Fletch back to the big screen.

Bringing Back Fletch

Although it’s been 33 years since Fletch Lives was released in theaters, director Greg Mottola tells BackstageOL how quickly they got the ball rolling on Confess, Fletch.

“You know we actually didn’t take that long once we started our project. Jon came to me and said Miramax owns the rights to all the books. I hadn’t read the books, I read them…I loved them. He had me at Fletch, the combination of Jon and this character was thrilling to me.”

Trying to fill Chevy Chase’s comedic shoes is a monumental task but Jon Hamm tells Morales how he made the character his own.

“We wanted to make this for a new generation. The thing I think if you’re trying to remake a movie or song or anything is a trap that you can fall into is trying to imitate rather than trying to innovate. I think that’s what we expressly did not want to do.” 

While Jon Hamm portrays the titular character of Fletch goes on to say that the comedic and creative talent of his fellow castmate is what made the film so fun to make.

“We did have a lot of very funny creative people like Roy Wood Jr., Marcia Gay (Harden), Ayden Mayeri, and Eugene Mirman. We had so much doing it and telling this story, we are very excited for people to get to see it.”
