TEHRAN Stars on Filming the AppleTV+ Political Thriller A World Away

“Some lines should never be crossed. There’s no going back now…” – Tamar Rabinyan

Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, “political action thriller” became a genre that skyrocketed in popularity. The genre attracted big names and skilled writers to create intricate stories that audiences adored. Movies like All The Presidents Men, Zero Dark Thirty, and Argo have become the standard. This genre, however, has been hesitant to dive into the politics of other nations or show the complexities in other areas of the world. Tehran seeks to merge those two ideas together with series stars Niv Sultan, Shaun Toub, Shervin Alenabi, Liraz Charhi, and Navid Negahban.

In the Apple Tv+ series, Tehran focuses on a Mossad agent infiltrating as a computer hacker in her home town. The conflict of interests presents key problems that evolve through the show. The program looks and feels believable. It’s a testament to the production behind the scenes.

“When we watch shows that have tried to imitate Iran in the past, none of them have really nailed it or felt accurate. Then, we got to Athens and felt immediately at home,” Shervin Alenabi told our own Jon Stenvall.  Series star Niv Sultan added, “Athens culturally felt home. Our production team was comprised of members who were Iranian, Israeli, Greek, and they all brought the flair and the accuracy needed to the set to make it truly feel like Tehran.”

Tehran is available now on Apple Tv+.
