‘The Girl on the Train’: Justin Theroux Figured Out Emily Blunt Was Pregnant

In The Girl on the Train, Justin Theroux takes on the role of Tom Watson who is recently divorced from Rachel, played by Emily Blunt. His alcoholic ex-wife ends up being tangled in a missing persons investigation after she witnesses something shocking at a couple’s home during her daily commute by train.

BackstageOL’s Dave Morales sat down with Theroux to talk about making the film, in which the actor revealed that he managed to figure out that Blunt was pregnant before she announced it.

“I told her her secret because I figured it out from her because she was…kind of being a little bit of a baby about some stunts,” Theroux said. “And when I say stunts, I don’t mean like falling off a building. I mean like she was having to like, run. You know, stuff like that, or go upstairs quickly.”

Theroux added that the two met up one weekend for dinner during filming, and she turned down his offer for a drink. The actor said had an inkling she was pregnant when “the woman who does Edge of Tomorrow and Sicario can’t run upstairs.”

“‘What’s going on Emily? Is there something you want to tell me?’” Theroux had asked her, and Blunt confirmed to him that she was pregnant with her second child. The two had to keep it a secret throughout the making of the film until it became obvious.

The Girl on the Train, which is based on the 2015 novel by Paula Hawkins, also stars Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Édgar Ramírez and Lisa Kudrow. It is currently playing in theaters.
