The HAIM Sisters Talk ‘Licorice Pizza’

The Haim sisters talk about their experience on set of Licorice Pizza, working with actual family members in the film, their version of Adam Sandler’s ‘Hanukkah Song’ that buzzed around the internet and much more in the latest interview with Dave Morales.

Who are the Haim sisters?

The pop band trio established in 2007 consists of Danielle, Alana and Este Haim who call themselves “Haim.” They have received numerous nominations at the Annual Grammy Awards throughout their musical career and have produced a number of hit albums. While the sisters have shined on stage for many years, they now shine on the big screen. The youngest of the three, Alana, makes her acting debut alongside her sisters in Licorice Pizza – a film about young love in the 70s.

Alana shared her feelings about starring in a major film while working with director Paul Anderson. “We’ve been worked with Paul for a very long time. he’s done a number of our music videos and he’s the best person to work with. I had no idea what to expect but I really did love it.”

The Haim Sisters’ Experience Working on set With Family

Not every actor can say they have worked alongside most of their family in a film. The sisters were fortunate enough to play sisters in Licorice Pizza with their actual father as their father in the film. Este explained the natural and unique experience when referring to a family dinner scene in the film. “It was really cool. That scene in particular is a direct riff out of our lives in general. It didn’t feel like acting, it actually felt like we were having a shabbat dinner. This is what we normally do except for normally when we have shabbat dinners, my dad plays the hand drum.”

In the film, Alana must drive a U-Haul which she has named Gertrude. “I love Gertrude. She was the best. She was honestly the best. I mean I was terrified of her for the first couple of months learning how to put Gurdy in reverse. That was the hardest thing,” Alana said. “When I told them I had to drive a U-Haul in stick shift they laughed,” she added. Since family members know each other best, the sisters joke about Alana’s driving abilities. “By the way, we drove her for most of her life. Terrible driver. She’s horrible because we would just drive her everywhere,” Danielle shared.

The Haim Sisters’ Remake of Adam Sandler’s iconic ‘Hanukkah Song’

Back in 1994, Adam Sandler performed his “Hanukkah Song” on Saturday Night Live that has thus remained a classic remembered by all. The trio revealed that they are Adam Sandler’s biggest fans and added their own version of the iconic song that also went viral.

“First of all we love Adam Sandler. Adam Sandler is amazing. We have been obsessed with the Hanukkah song when it came out,” Alana said. “I think we’ve made it abundantly clear that we’re fans of his,” Este added. “Every time this year rolls around we’re just like ‘Adam, we love you, where are you?’”she continued. “We just took it into our own hands,” Danielle said.
