The Witches: Backstage With Kristin Chenowith

“The key for us was bringing forward the heart within this story. The best visuals in the world don’t matter without bringing heart.” – Kristin Chenowith

Roald Dahl’s stories are widely known. Children around the world have matured with his storytelling shaping their worldviews. The BFG, Matilda, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, and James And The Giant Peach are just a few that come to mind. Within all of his stories lies an important element. Heart. Kristin Chenowith brings forth the heart in Roald Dahl’s latest film adaptation, The Witches. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, and Kristin Chenowith.

Kristin Chenowith’s career spans many successful years of Broadway plays, films, television, and music. She uses her many talents to evoke emotion within the productions. Now the current Covid-19 pandemic affects entertainment in different ways. However, Chenowith still brought her emotion to the project. We spoke to Kristin about the difficulties surrounding the film.

“We were hit in the middle of filming. So, I used my closet, soundproofed it as best I could, and continued to portray my character.

“3 screens surrounded me during my performances allowing me to speak to the director (Zemeckis) and the animators simultaneously to continue.”

The Witches is available exclusively on HBO Max.
