AMC Theatres Introduce Monthly Subscription Plan

Tired of paying $10-15 for a movie ticket?  AMC Theatres is now offering another option.

AMC Theatres has agreed to a partnership with MoviePass, a three-year-old company that allows subscribers to watch a movie a day for one flat fee. The partnership will allow patrons to subscribe to an “all you can movie plan” for $35-$45 a month.

The AMC MoviePass plan gives you the option to subscribe for either a 2D/standard format for $35, or pay $45 for the premium package, which includes 2D, 3D and IMAX films. The movie subscriber will just simply show up to the AMC theater and swipe their Movie Pass card which will print out their ticket. No line, no hassle, just swipe and enjoy.

This movie subscription service is being introduced during a time when it is much easier for movie-goers to stay at home and stream/rent a movie on a video service such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Redbox. “Millennials are consuming things differently, and that includes going to the movies,” Stacy Spikes said, chief executive and co-founder of Movie Pass. The $35-$45 flat rate would allow you to enjoy a movie a day for a month. An average movie ticket today costs about $10-$15.

“It frankly wouldn’t be smart to ignore the success of subscription in other areas of media,” said Christina Sternberg, senior vice president for corporate strategy at AMC.

For now, the AMC Movie Pass subscription will be tested out in theaters in Boston and Denver next month. More cities will be added later if the movie subscription plan is a success.
