Box Office: ‘November Man’, ‘As Above, So Below’ Achieve Modest Debuts

Newcomers The November Man and As Above, So Below performed modestly at the domestic box office as they opened earlier this week.

Relativity’s espionage thriller The November Man, featuring Pierce Brosnan, opened Wednesday night with a humble $862,000 in over 2,774 theaters.

The Roger Donaldson directed film, which cost $20 million to produce, centers on an ex-CIA agent who is lured out of retirement for one last mission to protect a witness. He then becomes pitted against his former pupil in a deadly game involving high-level CIA officials and the Russian president-elect.

Despite critics’ poor reviews, the action movie received a B plus CinemaScore from moviegoers, and is aiming to earn $9 million to $12 million over the six-day debut.

While the former is going after the adult audience, Legendary Entertainment’s horror film As Above, So Below is targeting younger consumers.

The John Erick Dowdle directed film dug up a humble $470,000 on Thursday night in 1,805 locations.

Universal’s found-footage thriller cost $5 million to produce, and is expected to make between $8 million and $10 million for the Labor Day weekend. It follows a team of explorers that uncover dark forces when they venture into the catacombs that lie beneath the streets of Paris.

Disney-Marvel’s holdover Guardians of the Galaxy is expected to top the charts once again, taking in between $12 million to $14 million. Paramount’s holdover Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will likely come in second with numbers between $11 million to $13 million.
