Doctor Strange to conquer once more!

Doctor Strange is dominating the box office, earning $14.5 million this past Friday at 3,882 locations. The Marvel-Disney film is expected to rack up an additional $45 million for the weekend.

The only other film that could likely compete Doctor Strange would be Fox’s Trolls, which earned $12.2 million at 4,066 theaters. Currently, it is on track for a second place finish with $34 million during its second week out, while newcomer Almost Christmas is looking at a fourth place finish with $16 million. It earned $5.9 million on Friday from 2,376 theaters.

Almost Christmas, directed by David E. Talbert, is produced by Will Packer (Think Like a Man, Ride Along). The cast includes Kimberly Elise, Omar Epps, Danny Glover, Romany Malco, Mo’Nique, Nicole Ari Parker, J.B. Smoove, Gabrielle Union, Jessie Usher and DC Young Fly.

The other new wide release for the weekend is Paramount’s Arrival. With strong support from critics (a 93 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the film is looking to debut with $24 million from 2,317 locations. On Friday, the film earned $9.3 million.

Arrival – directed by Denis Villeneuve – centers on a dozen mysterious alien ships touching down on Earth, and it stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg and Tzi Ma.
