Box Office Preview: ‘Don’t Breathe’ To Suffocate ‘Suicide Squad’

Step aside Suicide Squad, Sony and Screen Gems’ horror flick Don’t Breathe is expected to debut first place this weekend.

The film, which cost less than $10 million to produce, is likely to score somewhere between $11 million to $14 million from more than 2,900 locations, according to analysts.

“I think it could surprise this weekend,” said Shawn Robbins, senior analyst with BoxOffice.com. “It’s been a slow and steady climb on social media and these low-budget to mid-budget horror films tend to do much better than expected.”

Don’t Breathe follows a group of teenagers who break into the home of a wealthy blind man, thinking they’ll get away with the perfect heist. Instead, the teens find themselves trying to escape from his home, desperately trying to stay alive. The film stars Stephen Lang, Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, as well as Daniel Zovatto.

Currently, the R-rated film – directed by Fede Alvaraez – holds an impressive 92 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.

The other nationwide release this weekend is Mechanic: Resurrection, a sequel to the 2011 film The Mechanic, which is predicted to debut with $6 million to $8 million from 2,258 theaters. The action film, directed by Dennis Gansel, stars Jason Statham, Jessica Alba, Tommy Lee Jones and Michelle Yeoh.
