Box Office Preview: ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ vs. ‘The Fault In Our Stars’

This weekend two book adaptations are hitting the silver screen and will be battling it out against Maleficent for the top spot at the box office.

One of the films is The Fault in Our Stars, a highly-anticipated adaptation of a young adult novel by John Green, stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as young lovers who meet at a support group for cancer patients. It is a romantic comedy drama that is sure to be a tear jerker. The film is expected to gross $35 million to $40 million this weekend, but 20th Century Fox is only expecting $25 million with the belief that Maleficent will draw some female moviegoers away from the emotional film.

The other book adaptation is Edge of Tomorrow, a science fiction film starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. The film is based on Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Cruise plays a soldier fighting a war against aliens who dies, but has to live the same day over and over again until he wins the war. Edge of Tomorrow so far has received great reviews from critics, but is looking like it will take third place at the box office this weekend with around $25 million, behind The Fault in Our Stars and Maleficent.

Maleficent, which debuted with $70 million last weekend, is expected to gross around $35 million this weekend. X-Men: Days of Future Past and Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West are projected to round out the top 5.
