Box Office Preview: ‘Ouija’ To Spook Keanu Reeves’ ‘John Wick’

With Halloween just around the corner, Universal’s Ouija is expected to be this weekend’s top-grossing film, scaring off Keanu Reeves’ John Wick.

The séance-filled horror film, costing less than $5 million to produce, is expected to bring in $20 million by analysts when it debuts in 2,856 theaters. The studio, on the other hand, predicts the launch of the movie will earn a modest $18 million.

Earlier this month, the R-rated Annabelle unexpectedly debuted with a solid $37 million, thus indicating that Ouija could over perform, as well. Appealing to teenagers and young adults with its PG-13 rating, the film stars newcomers Daren Kagasoff and Olivia Cooke. Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions produced the film.

The thriller will have little competition going up against Lionsgate’s John Wick, the weekend’s other wide release. Directed by Chad Stahelski, the R-rated action flick stars Reeves as a former hitman who comes out of retirement seeking revenge on the gangsters who have taken everything from him. It is expected to debut with $8 million at 2,589 locations.

Alongside Reeves, the film stars Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Dean Winters, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo and Willem Dafoe.

Last week’s victor Fury is predicted to rake in $13 million in its second weekend, while Gone Girl takes in $12 million in its fourth weekend. So far, the adaption has made $110 million and will most likely pass The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by the end of this month. If so, it will be given the title as David Fincher’s highest-grossing film domestically.
