Box Office Preview: Sony’s ‘Don’t Breathe’ To Smother Newcomers

Sony’s Don’t Breathe is expected to win the second weekend at the box office, scaring off newcomers The Light Between Oceans and Morgan.

Early estimates predict that the horror-thriller will gather an additional $15 million (already picked up $4.2 million on Friday). With a low production budget of less than $10 million, Don’t Breathe is already in profit for Sony.

It stars Jane Levy, Dylan Minnette, and Daniel Zovatto as three friends who attempt to rob a blind man, played by Stephen Lang, but then get trapped in his house.

Disney’s drama newcomer The Light Between Oceans, starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, is predicted to debut with $6 million from 1,500 locations. On Friday, the adult drama grossed roughly $1.4 million.

Directed by Derek Cianfrance from his script based on the M.L. Stedman novel, the film follows a lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia, who raise a baby they rescued from a rowboat that was washed ashore.

Fox’s sci-fi horror newcomer Morgan, directed by Luke Scott, is expected to open to around $2 million from 2,020 theaters after earning $615,000 on Friday. Earlier predictions estimated a $5 million weekend debut.

The film centers on a robot – played by Anya Taylor-Joy – with superhuman qualities, who attacks one of her creators. The cast includes Kate Mara, Toby Jones, Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook, Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Paul Giamatti.
