Box Office Recap: ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Conquered With $181.8M
Marvel-Disney’s Captain America: Civil War dominated the box office with a stellar $181.8 million from 4,266 locations – the fifth biggest opening ever.
Falling behind Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million), The Avengers ($207.4 million), Jurassic World ($208.8 million) and Disney’s all-time champ, Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million), Civil War has already accumulated $678.4 million globally. Its predecessor, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, debuted with $95 million in 2014.
The second installment pits Captain America (Chris Evans) against Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), and co-stars a squad of returning superheroes including Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Civil War received a 91 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and an A CinemaScore from moviegoers, who were 59 percent male.

“This is such an awesome way to officially kick off summer,” says comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian. “It’s just a phenomenal movie with great word of mouth and excellent social-media buzz. A lot of people are figuring out that this is a de facto Avengers movie, and it goes beyond Captain America to incorporate other superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Falling to second place is Disney’s The Jungle Book with $21.9 million, after reigning in first place for the past three weeks. Jon Favreau’s CGI adventure, starring Neel Sethi as the orphaned Mowgli, has gathered a total of $285 million domestically and $776.2 million worldwide. The film features the voices of Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, Bill Murray and Christopher Walken.
In third place is Mother’s Day with $9 million in its second week out. “That’s a good showing,” Dergarabedian says. “Obviously, this movie is completely keyed to this weekend and they’re in a good spot to capitalize on that.”
Open Road’s comedy saw a 7 percent increase in business during the Mother’s Day weekend. The movie starring, Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Kate Hudson, has accumulated $20.7 million in its first ten days.
Rounding out fourth and fifth place is The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Keanu with $3.6 million and $3.1 million, respectively. Winter’s War has taken in $40.4 million domestically, while Keanu has gathered a total of $15.1 million domestically.
