Box Office Recap: ‘Captain America’ Threepeats at #1, ‘Transcendence’ Bombs
For a third consecutive week, Captain America: The Winter Soldier held onto the top spot at the box office while Fox’s family-friendly Rio 2 remained in second over Easter weekend.
The big shock for the weekend was Heaven Is For Real surpassing Johnny Depp’s Transcendence for third with $21.5 million. The film is based on the best-selling book Heaven Is For Real and stars Greg Kinnear, Kelly Reilly, Connor Corum and Thomas Haden Church. The Christian drama was produced on a small budget of $12 million.
Meanwhile, Transcendence bombed with a debut of only $11.15 million. The sci-fi film was produced on a budget of $100 million and stars Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy and Paul Bettany.
Another film that didn’t perform as well as expected was A Haunted House 2, starring Marlon Wayans. While the horror-spoof has already recovered it’s $4 million production budget with an opening of $9.1 million, the take is nowhere near that of it’s predecessor, A Haunted House, which opened with $18.1 million in 2013.

10. God’s Not Dead – $4,801,000
Film Synopsis:
God’s Not Dead is a feature film about college student Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper) whose faith is challenged by his Philosophy Professor Mr. Radisson (Kevin Sorbo) who believes God does not exist. It revolves around the lives of several individuals who are also challenged by a world that believes God doesn’t exist starring Kevin Sorbo, David A.R. White, Dean Cain, Shane Harper and the Newsboys.
9. Noah – $5,000,000
Film Synopsis:
A man is chosen by God to undertake a momentous mission to rescue the innocent before an apocalyptic flood cleanses the wicked from the world.
8. Oculus – $5,202,000
Film Synopsis:
Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim and Kaylie forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim’s innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners over the past century. With the mysterious entity now back in their hands, Tim and Kaylie soon find their hold on reality shattered by terrifying hallucinations, and realize, too late, that their childhood nightmare is beginning again…
7. Divergent – $5,750,000
Film Synopsis:
DIVERGENT is a thrilling action-adventure film set in a world where people are divided into distinct factions based on human virtues. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy by a faction leader (Kate Winslet) to destroy all Divergents, Tris must learn to trust in the mysterious Four (Theo James) and together they must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late. Based on the best-selling book series by Veronica Roth.
6. Draft Day – $5,900,000
Film Synopsis:
On the day of the NFL Draft, general manager Sonny Weaver (Costner) has the opportunity to save football in Cleveland when he trades for the number one pick. He must quickly decide what he’s willing to sacrifice in pursuit of perfection as the lines between his personal and professional life become blurred on a life-changing day for a few hundred young men with dreams of playing in the NFL.
5. A Haunted House 2 – $9,100,000
Film Synopsis:
Crossing new lines and breaking old barriers, A HAUNTED HOUSE 2 is the sequel to the hilarious box-office hit starring Marlon Wayans as Malcolm who, after exorcising the demons of his ex, is starting fresh with his new girlfriend and her two children. Film Synopsis:

Film Synopsis:
The entire cast of the animated smash RIO returns in RIO 2, and they are joined by a new flock of top actors and musical talents. Rich with grandeur, character, color and music, RIO 2 finds Jewel (Anne Hathaway), Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) and their three kids leaving their domesticated life in that magical city for a journey to the Amazon. They encounter a menagerie of characters who are born to be wild, voiced by Oscar nominee Andy Garcia, Oscar/Emmy/Tony-winner Rita Moreno, Grammy winner Bruno Mars, and Tony winner Kristin Chenoweth.
