Box Office Recap: ‘Ride Along’ Breaks January Box Office Record

Universal Pictures’ buddy-cop comedy “Ride Along,” starring Kevin Hart and Ice Cube, scored huge numbers at the box office over the weekend, grossing an estimated $41.2 million in ticket sales through Sunday in the U.S. and Canada.

“Ride Along” is on track to take in $47.8 million through Monday, beating all expectations set in place for the low budgeted $25 million comedy.  The film is not only the highest-grossing Martin Luther King Jr. Day four-day weekend opening ever, but also the largest release for the month of January, topping monster movie “Cloverfield,” which generated $46.1 million during its holiday debut in 2008.

Coming in at No. 2 over the weekend was “Lone Survivor” with $23.2 million, followed by “The Nut Job” with $20.5 million, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” with $17.2 million and Disney’s “Frozen” with $11.9 million in ticket sales.
