Box Office Report: ‘Gravity’ Sets October Record with $55.6 Million Debut

Gravity rocketed into first place at the box office by earning $55.6 million in its debut weekend.  The film became the best October opening of all time and was the best three-day showing of Sandra Bullock and George Clooney’s careers.

Thanks to raving reviews for Bullock and Clooney’s onscreen performances and phenomenal IMAX 3D graphics, the film is generating a TON of pre-Oscar buzz.  I see a lot of nominations for this film in sight!

Second place went to last week’s winner, the family friendly Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2, which earned $21.5 million in its sophomore weekend at the box office.  To date, the film has earned $60.6 million at the North American box office.

Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake’s new film, Runner Runner, debuted in third place with a meager $7.6 million.  In Runner Runner, Timberlake stars as a Princeton graduate student who travels to Coast Rice after he believes an internet tycoon (played by Ben Affleck) has taken him for all he’s got on an online poker website.
