Disney Planning Live-Action ‘Aladdin’ Prequel
Disney is developing Genies, a live-action comedy adventure prequel of its 1992 animated classic Aladdin.
The film will focus on the realm of the Genies and reveal how Aladdin’s Genie – voiced by the late Robin Williams – ended up imprisoned in the lamp shown in the original Arabic folk-tale feature.
San Andreas’ Tripp Vinson will be producing the prequel from a script penned by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, who have both worked on 2009’s Friday the 13th and the upcoming O’Lucky Day.
Vinson will also be developing a Prince Charming live-action spinoff and Bob the Musical for Disney. The studio keeps growing the list of live-action remakes after the massive success of recent reboots (Cinderella, Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland). Upcoming live-action versions include Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, Winnie the Pooh, Mulan and Dumbo.
Aladdin, which tells the story of a street Urchin who uses a Genie’s magic power to make himself off as a prince to impress a beautiful princess, grossed more than $500 million at the worldwide box office back in the early 90s.
