‘Divergent’ Headed for Huge $50-60M Opening

Divergent has not even premiered yet but it looks like the opening weekend alone is on track to make more than $50 million.

While the first Hunger Games movie opened to $152 million in 2012, it is unlikely that Divergent will top the debut of the Suzanne Collins series.  It does, however,  have a chance to beat the first Twilight movie, which opened with $69 million in 2008.

Divergent is based on the Veronica Roth best-selling young adult novel of the same name.  The film stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James as Beatrice “Tris” Prior and Tobias “Four” Eaton, respectively. Even though Divergent doesn’t open in theaters until March 21, two sequels have already been scheduled for release in March 2015 and 2016.

Divergent was filmed on a production budget of $80 million and has already recouped  half of the film’s cost with pre-sales.

Tickets for Divergent went on sale Tuesday, March 4 at 9 a.m.
