“Ender’s Game” Tops Box Office

The Harrison Ford starring sci-fi movie “Ender’s Game” topped the weekend box office pulling in an estimated $28 million. While those numbers are big, they are well below numbers earned by other young-adult themed releases such as “The Hunger Games” and “Twilight.”

Studio execs were pleased with the opening weekend, however, noting that this could be the start of another franchise of films. The movie also stars Asa Butterfield as well as Sir Ben Kingsley.

Johnny Knoxville’s “Bad Grandpa” falls to number two bringing in an additional $20.5 million in its second weekend, with a domestic total reaching more than $62 million.

The big surprise news of the weekend saw the more “mature” themed “Last Vegas” actually beating the animated family release “Free Birds” movie.

“Last Vegas,” featuring an all-star cast of silver screen veterans including Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline, opened in third place, with $16.5 million.

“Free Birds” landed in the number four spot with $16.2 million.

Closing out the top 5  is the hugely successful Sandra Bullock, George Clooney starring movie about space travel, “Gravity,” which earned $13.1 million over the weekend, bringing its domestic total to $220 million.
