‘Finding Dory’ Breaks Single-Day Animated Record with $55 million

The Finding Nemo sequel is breaking records.

On Friday, Disney/Pixar’s Finding Dory grossed $54.95 million, making it the biggest single day at the box office for an animated movie. The previous record-holder was 2007’s Shrek the Third with $47 million. With such a big debut, the projections for Finding Dory’s opening weekend are now in the $130-$140 million range.

Finding Dory could also have the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated film. To do so, it will need to beat Shrek the Third’s debut of $121.6 million. It is also likely the film will have the biggest Pixar opening, beating out the $110.3 million debut by Toy Story 3 back in 2010. If it hits the $140 million mark this weekend, it will have the third-highest debut of 2016 behind Captain America: Civil War ($179 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million).

Finding Dory, directed by Andrew Stanton and Angus MacLane, stars Albert Brooks, Ed O’Niel, Idris Elba, Diane Keaton, Sigourney Weaver and Hayden Rolence.
