‘Looper,’ A Clever Sci-fi Thriller

Joseph Gordon-Levitt returns to the big screen for the third time this year, which won’t be the last. This time he has been made to look and sound like Bruce Willis, because they happen to be the same person. Rian Johnson (“Brick”) writes and directs this awesome action film that is actually worth time and money. It goes the extra mile in being smart with the great idea that’s at its core and being nicely contained without being too complicated.

Having to do with time travel, the film follows Joe (Gordon-Leviit) who is a looper – an assassin for the gangsters of the future who have control of the invention of time travel. They send back who they want to be taken care of so that it makes for a clean kill. Now, there is something called “closing your loop,” which means killing a looper that is still alive in the future – which ends your career as a looper and pays handsomely. When lots of loopers begin to close their loops, Joe comes close to doing it himself – only to find it is himself (Willis).

Without giving away too much of the plot, this begins the story of “Looper.” It is the best, most imaginative Bruce Willis sci-fi film since “Twelve Monkeys.” It also sports an all star cast in the supporting category: Emily Blunt, Paul Dano (“There Will Be Blood”), Noah Segan (“Deadgirl”), and Jeff Daniels. The bottom line about this film is that it is stylish, original and worthwhile – it demands to be seen and enjoyed.

“Looper” is now playing in theaters everywhere, making $21.2 million dollars so far putting it in the number 2 spot in the box office.
