Mel Gibson Developing ‘Passion of the Christ’ Sequel

Mel Gibson, along with writer Randall Wallace, are currently developing a sequel to 2004’s The Passion of the Christ, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Wallace, who was the screenwriter for Gibson’s Oscar-winning film Braveheart, revealed they are working on a script for a film about Jesus’ resurrection. The two began to seriously develop the project when they worked together on the upcoming war drama film Hacksaw Ridge.

“I always wanted to tell this story,” Wallace told the Hollywood Reporter. “The Passion is the beginning and there’s a lot more story to tell.”

The Passion of the Christ is the highest grossing independent film of all time, making $612 million worldwide. Gibson directed the film, which only cost $30 million to make.

“The evangelical community considers The Passion the biggest movie ever out of Hollywood, and they kept telling us that they think a sequel will be even bigger,” Wallace added.

The sequel is currently in the early script stage.
