‘Pinocchio’ Getting Live-Action Treatment From Disney
Just last week, Disney announced that they have plans to release a live-action remake of Mulan. Their latest addition to the list is about a living puppet wanting to become a real boy – Pinocchio!
According to Deadline, About a Boy screenwriter Peter Hedges is set to pen the screenplay, which will be more similar to the 1883 Carlo Collodi version than Disney’s 1940 animation. The original story, The Adventures of Pinocchio, is much darker than Disney’s animated film, featuring stuff like Pinocchio accidentally killing Jiminy Cricket, who then returns as a ghost.
The animated feature was a hit at the box office, grossing $84.2 million, which was a huge amount back in the 1940s. It still holds a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The list of Disney classics getting the live-action treatment seems to be ever growing. Last month, Cinderella dazzled audiences with a monumentally successful debut, which was led by the victories of Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland.
Currently, Jon Favreau is producing The Jungle Book, Tim Burton is directing Dumbo (as well as a sequel to Alice in Wonderland), while Bill Condon is preparing production on Beauty and the Beast with Emma Watson and Dan Stevens. The latter is scheduled to hit theaters on March 17th, 2017.
