‘Red Notice’ Sets New Netflix Record

After becoming Netflix‘s most expensive movie made to date, Red Notice has broken another record on Nov. 12, becoming the platform’s most-streamed movie on opening day, according to Ryan Reynolds.

The news does not come as a surprise given the film’s star-studded cast featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. The action-comedy tells the story of FBI profiler John Hartley (Johnson) having to reluctantly team up with renowned art thief Nolan Booth (Reynolds) to have a chance at catching the world’s most wanted art thief known as “The Bishop” (Gadot). The plot is filled with witty references making fun of blockbuster action movies. To have the chemistry and clout of the heavy-hitters on screen, Netflix had to fork over $60 million of the record-breaking $200 million budget to the protagonists.

Poor Critic Reviews

However, the critics seem to be seeing straight through Red Notice’s big money and fame. The movie has a disappointing score of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics wondering where all the expensive budget was spent. The plot, in particular, is under fire, targeted for being so lackluster and predictable that even for a turn-off-your-brain-and-watch movie, it’s bland.

Despite the critical hate, fans are loving Red Notice; Rotten Tomatoes reports a 93% approval rate from the general audience. Given the commercial success and the movie’s open-ended conclusion, Netflix may very well consider a sequel in the near future.
