Spider-Man’s Introduction Was Not ‘Captain America: Civil War’

BackstageOL.com took part in a junket for the upcoming release of Spider-Man: Homecoming in New York, talking to cast and creative minds behind the much-anticipated summer blockbuster. You’ll hear what star Tom Holland and company had to say in videos to come, but this little reveal comes courtesy of The Huffington Post (via Looper).

Peter Parker did not enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) during the climatic airport battle in Captain America: Civil War. Nope. Actor Tom Holland confirms a wild theory that a young Peter Parker appeared in Iron Man 2.

In the 2010 film, there is a scene where a young kid in an Iron Man mask attempts to face off with a killer robot. Looking the robot in the eye, unafraid, the kid looks to attack only to have the robot point its gun at him. Tony Stark comes in to save the day. If you need a reminder, just watch the clip below.

While it is not totally implausible that this moment was in the foresight of producer Kevin Feige, the dominoes had to fall just right for the day to make the connection. The biggest is Marvel getting back some control over the Spider-Man character after Sony Pictures’ lukewarm The Amazing Spider-Man 2, released in 2014.

But when Holland was asked about the theory, he offered this reply.

“I literally had a conversation with Kevin Feige only minutes ago. Maybe I’ve just done a big old spoiler, but it’s out there now. It’s cool. I like the idea that Peter Parker has been in the universe since the beginning.”

There you have it – straight from your neighborhood Spider-Man.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to web-sling its way into theaters on July 7. Joining Holland, the film also stars Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei, Donald Glover, and Robert Downey Jr. Jon Watts (Cop Car) directs based on a script Watts, John Francis Daley, Jonathan Goldstein, Christopher Ford, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers.
