‘Star Wars: Force Awakens’ Tops ‘Avatar’ to Become Highest Grossing Film in North America

By the end of today, Star Wars: The Force Awakens will officially overtake James Cameron’s Avatar as the biggest domestic film in history, breaking yet another box office record.

Disney reported that on Tuesday, the film had so far made a total of $758.2 million, which was about $2 million short of Avatar’s record of $760.5 million for its entire theatrical run. The Force Awakens is expected to surpass that amount today after only 20 days of release.

Inflation is not considered in these amounts. When accounting for inflation, the seventh installment of the Star Wars franchise ranks in 21st place for the biggest domestic films. Gone with the Wind tops the list with an adjusted $1.74 billion and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope is in second place with $1.53 billion.

Internationally, The Force Awakens has made $799.1 million, and it hasn’t even been released in China, where it will debut on January 9th. Globally, The Force Awakens has made a total of $1.56 billion. Avatar, which holds the record as the biggest film of all time, made a total of $2.78 billion worldwide. Currently, The Force Awakens is the fourth biggest film worldwide. Industry experts expect the film to eventually make $2.2 billion to $2.4 billion worldwide, which would make it the second biggest film in history.
