Vin Diesel Confirms Seventh ‘Fast and the Furious’ Film

Fast and the Furious 6 will be in theaters May

Fast and the Furious 6 releases May 24, 2013

Vin Diesel has confirmed that the sixth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise will be split into two movies, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

In February 2010, Diesel had confirmed that sixth installment of the franchise was being planned.  Producer Neal H. Mortiz stated, “In Vin and my mind we already know what the sixth movie is, we’ve already been talking about it. Vin and I have had numerous conversations about what that might be. And we’re starting to get serious about it right now. We just finished [Fast Five] like 4 or 5 weeks ago and we just needed a break, and now we’re gonna start focusing on that.”

That was over a year ago.

Now it seems that the script for the sixth installment has become so long that the producers had no choice but to split the film into two separate movies.

“With the success of this last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn’t have enough space,” Diesel told THR.

Universal Pictures’ Fast Five saw the introduction of four new characters including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.  With over seven main characters and 31 supporting characters throughout the franchise, it is no surprise that the character relationship development would encompass more than one film.

“We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages,” Diesel explained. “The studio said, ‘You can’t fit all that story in one damn movie!’”

Now the question comes to whether the studio should film both installments back to back, like the Lord of the Rings and the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows films were, or to film each movie as two completely separate productions.

Either way, The Fast and the Furious 6 is expected to be released in theaters May 24, 2013.
