Watch: Steven Spielberg’s ‘Bridge of Spies’ First Trailer

The first trailer for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming historical thriller, Bridge of Spies, has been released!

Based on the true story of a Brooklyn lawyer thrust into extraordinary circumstances in 1957, Hanks stars as James Donovan, an insurance lawyer recruited by the CIA to fight for the release of a captured Soviet spy named Rudolf Abel.

Although Donovan lost the case, which threatened to destroy his reputation and career, he was defending the American ideal that everyone deserves a fair trial. Donovan’s efforts were also part of the government’s plan to ultimately swap Abel for a U.S. pilot, Francis Gary Powers, a U.S. pilot shot down over Soviet airspace in 1960 while flying a U-2 spy plane.

Alongside Hanks, the film stars Scott Shepherd, Sebastian Koch, Mark Rylance and Alan Alda. Ethan and Joel Coen co-wrote the screenplay with Matt Charman, with Spielberg, Marc Platt and Kristie Macosko Krieger as producers.

Bridge of Spies hits theaters October 16th.
