Zach Braff’s Hilarious Story About Gabrielle Union’s Husband

Zach Braff doesn’t follow sports. He had always known his Cheaper by the Dozen co-star, Gabrielle Union, was married to a famous athlete, but it wasn’t until the two bonded over Union’s trips to Milan and visits with Oprah he finally asked: who is Union’s husband?

Sports and NBA enthusiasts will be familiar with the name Dwayne Wade. The former shooting guard played 16 seasons in the association, most notably with the Miami Heat. Among his many accolades, Wade was a 3-time NBA champion, a Finals MVP, a 13-time all-star, a gold medalist and he was a member of the NBA’s 75th-anniversary team. His Heat jersey was retired in February 2020. He and Union married in 2014.

Braff takes a moment to set the record straight during an exclusive interview with BackstageOL.

“Listen, I don’t follow sports at all,” said Braff. “I knew she was married to a very famous athlete, I just didn’t know he was like, one of the greatest basketball players of all-time.”

It isn’t a stretch to call Wade one of the best ever. He’s certainly one of the best Heat players in franchise history. He stands as the franchise’s all-time leader in scoring, assists and steals.

Taking all this into consideration, it makes sense that the power couple would have access to luxurious excursions, as Braff found out from Union one day on set.

“I’d be like, ‘what’d you do this weekend? I personally went to the dog park.’ She was like, ‘well, we flew to Milan, and then we were on so-and-so’s yacht, and then we visited Oprah in Paris, and then we went to Miami.’ And I’m like, wait, ‘who is it that you’re married to?’ I had to put it all together.”

Cheaper by the Dozen is now playing in theaters. It is a remake of the 1950 and 2003 films of the same name. The Disney film is directed by Gail Lerner and stars Braff and Union.
