Dr. Dre To Release First Album In 15 Years

Dr. Dre announced on his Beats 1 radio show, The Pharmacy, that he will be releasing a new album this week, called Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre — his first since 1999’s 2001.

“I was leaving the set, going to the studio, and I felt myself being so inspired by the movie that I started to record an album,” Dre said during the broadcast. “I kept it under wraps, and now the album is finished,” and will feature guests including Cube, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Snoop Dogg. “It’s going to be my grand finale,” he continued. “The record is bananas.”

He stated that the new music is inspired by his work on the biopic Straight Outta Compton, out August 14th, which tells the story of how one of the most famous West Coast rap groups, N.W.A., rose to fame from the streets of Compton, California. The group consisted of Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Ice Cube and MC Ren.

Dre explained on the broadcast that the reason he never released the long-awaited planned album, Detox, was because “it just wasn’t good.”

“The reason Detox didn’t come out was because I didn’t like it,” Dre said. “ I don’t think I did a good enough job, and I couldn’t do that to my fans and I couldn’t do that to myself, to be perfectly honest with you. I just wasn’t feeling it.”
