MTV VMA’s…..The Morning After

Did you watch the big spectacle that was the MTV Video Music Awards?

If you didn’t, here is what you missed:

Beyonce announced her pregnancy, Lady Gaga’s male alter ego took over, Katy Perry and Adele won (good for them), Russell Brand had a touching tribute to Amy Winehouse (which included a video of Winehouse and Tony Bennett’s soon to be released song) and a powerful performance of Jay Z and Kanye West’s “Otis”.

While that does seem like a lot, the thought running through my head today is “is this another awards show that is necessary?”

I mean, I support music and any exposure for artists is great, but is MTV really still about music?

When is the last time you even saw a video on the channel?

Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine tweeted this about te VMA’s:

“the VMA’s. one day a year when MTV pretends to still care about music. I’m drawing a line in the sand. f*ck you VMA’s. still waiting to have my ‘jerry macguire mission statement moment of deep regret…’ not happening. phew! i may be a pop singer. but every once in a while the angsty teenager in me just blurts out some raw honesty. it’s a reflex.”

Is he right?

Me, personally, felt as if I was watching a drunken frat party starring a bunch of pop stars.

Maybe this is MTV’s way of acknowledging the “music” in it’s brand name…?

Whatever it is, winning a Moonman probably meant more years ago. After watching the show last night, they now seem like cool looking paper weights.

Riki Rachtman (remember him from “Headbangers Ball on MTV?) tweeted this before the show started:

“MTV having a music award show is like PETA giving out Hunting awards”

Maybe HE is right.

Note: That IS Gaga at the beginning.
