Born on this day was Mike Hugg, who was the drummer for the British pop band Manfred Mann. In 1964, their cover single of “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” was a UK No. 1 in August for two weeks, and a US No. 1 in October for two weeks.

Neil Sedaka started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with “Breaking Up Is Hard To Do.”

The Beatles’ first film, A Hard Day’s Night, had its US premiere in New York City.

Diana Ross held a party for 350 guests at Beverly Hills’ Daisy Club to announce her discovery of the newest Motown act, The Jackson 5. The group gained even more exposure by performing at the first Miss Black America pageant.

Elvis and Pricilla Presley filed for divorce. They had married in May of 1967.

KISS received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The band had released over 30 albums and sold over 80 million records worldwide.

Black Sabbath, Linkin Park, Slipknot and Marilyn Manson all appeared at the Ozzfest at PNC Bank Arts Centre, New Jersey.

Nelly and Kelly Rowland started a seven week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with “Dilemma.”
