1956

The Platters “The Great Pretender”, started a two run at No.1 on the US singles chart, a No. 5 in the UK.

1959

Ray Charles recorded “What’d I Say” in NYC. The song became Charles’ biggest hit to date, reaching No.1 on the R&B and No.6 on the pop charts.

1966

The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson recorded the classic song “Good Vibrations”, which went on to become the band’s third US No.1 hit. When Wilson was a child, his mother told him that dogs sometimes bark at people in response to their “bad vibrations.” Fascinated by the concept, he turned this into the general idea for the song.

1969

The Jimi Hendrix Experience appeared at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England.

1974

KISS released their first album KISS.

1987

Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer” was at No.1 on the US singles chart and No.4 in the UK.

1987

1990

At the 11th Brit Awards, Freddie Mercury made his final public appearance with Queen. They received the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.

2006

The Rolling Stones gave a free concert before an audience of over 1 million people at Copacabana Beach in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

2013

African-American soul and R&B singer Otis Damon Harris, who was a member of The Temptations, died at the age of 62 after a 14-year battle with prostate cancer. Harris was a member of The Temptations from 1971 to 1975, joining shortly after the departure of Eddie Kendricks.
