Astros: Correa & Gurriel Win Golden Gloves

Astros shortstop Carlos Correa and first baseman Yuli Gurriel have been awarded this year’s Golden Gloves. The MLB celebrated its best defensive players from this season on Sunday night. Both Correa and Gurriel are first-time winners for the American League.

Correa and Gurriel’s Impact in MLB

Correa is in his seventh season and most likely final season in Houston MLB. He has finally claimed a Golden Glove award for one of his best defensive seasons. Additionally, he is the Astro’s first shortstop winner since Roger Metzger in 1973.

“Defense for me wins championships and to lead the league in DRS meant a lot to me,” Correa said after the awards. “I’ve been working on my craft for so many years and I’m glad that I finally get rewarded for the excellence on the field.”

This season, Correa had 21 defensive runs saved and an ultimate zone rating of 2.9. Correa committed 11 errors in 194 plays as well. He also beat out Minnesota’s Andrelton Simmons and Seattle’s J.P Crawford. At 37 years old, Gurriel is the oldest first-time Golden Glove winner. He was worth five defensive runs saved this season with only seven committed errors. “It was a long time coming for him,” Correa said. “He makes every one of us better. He makes our job easier. I’m so happy and proud of him. Nobody deserves it more.”
