Apple CarPlay Will Be Available To Aftermarket Consumers

Pioneer has revealed that they will be selling aftermarket receivers that support Apple’s infotainment system. The firmware update this summer will make CarPlay to be more accessible for many more vehicles.

In early March, Volvo published on their YouTube account a demo of the CarPlay in action. The device allows consumers to navigate safely with the help of Siri voice commands, making it a more driving-friendly experience.

Apple dubs it “the best iPhone experience on four wheels.” Standard iOS apps, such as maps, music, phone, and messages will be easier for drivers to access without having to be distracted. Third-party music streaming apps, like Spotify and iHeartRadio, will also be compatible.

The infotainment system is expected to be available on select new vehicles in 2014, such as Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Hyundai Motor Company, and Volvo. However, Apple expects additional auto manufacturers to develop a setup that will provide their drivers with CarPlay, including BMW, Ford, General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan Motor Company, PSA Peugeot Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota.

CarPlay will be available as part of an iOS 7 update, and is only compatible with Lightning-enabled iPhones including iPhone 5, 5c, and 5s. The price of the system will range from $700 to $1,400.
